Retarding Admixtures


Retarding admixtures helps and work as water reducing agent and Cemenrt retarder keep concrete workable during placement and delay the initial set of concrete. Chemically retarder slow the setting rate of concrete, are used to counteract the accelerating effect of hot weather on concrete setting. High temperatures often cause an increased rate of hardening which makes placing and finishing difficult. Retarders keep concrete workable during placement and delay the initial set of concrete. Most retarders also function as water reducers and may entrain some air in concrete. Retarder use for increase setting time of cement.


Accelerating admixtures

Accelerators make concrete set faster rapidly after mixing with concrete. This product can be added to a concrete batch either immediately before or during mixing to kick the set time of a batch of concrete into high gear and initiate setting time one to three times faster than normal mortar and concrete. RXSOL-67-6706-220 used as concrete retarder, water reducing agent. Specifically developed by use in high quality concrete for workability retention at low water content. Also sodium gluconate as a retarders keep concrete workable during placement and delay the initial set of concrete. This is an additional admixture which uses in mortar/concrete to Provides good pumpable concrete.

These admixtures slow down the hydration process. They may also reduce the setting time of cement. Retarding admixtures fall into two categories: regular and extended-set. Regular, most commonly referred to as just “retarders,” are used to place concrete in hot climates when long travel times are expected or, in cases of emergency, when placement is delayed. They are also commonly used for mass concrete pours to prevent cold joints.
 
Extended-set control admixtures are those used to delay hydration for many hours or even days. These are usually two-component admixture systems. The first component is a retarder (stabilizer) which delays the setting of concrete.
 
The second component is an accelerator (activator) which overcomes the retarder. The concrete typically reaches the initial set in a few hours after the activator is applied. In the precast industry, retarding admixtures are also used as surface retarders. Surface retarders are used in making exposed aggregate architectural precast. They are typically sprayed or rolled onto the forms. The concrete is then cast into the forms. The next day, the retarded cement is water blasted or brushed off the concrete’s surface, producing an exposed aggregate finish.

Cement reacts with water to form a hardening paste that binds the aggregate together to produce hard concrete. This hardening process is called hydration. And materials used to slowing down hydration process is called Retarder.

Best dose rate can be determined in trial batch mixes. While In normal concrete a dosage of between 0.7-2.0 litre for 100kg. total cementitious material. In a high performance, low water cement ratio concrete, a dosage of between 1.5-3.5 litre / 100kg total cementitious material to to improve strengthsThe addition of the admixture will allow the removal of water from the mix whilst maintaining workability.

After initial trials. Minor modifications to the overall mix design may be made to optimize performance.

Note : Initial trials should be made with normal concrete mix designs. The use of a combination of admixtures in the same concrete mix and or cement replacement may alter the setting time. Trials should always be conducted to determine such setting times. Never mix RXSOL-67-6706-220 Cement retarder directly to cement the admixture should be added to the concrete with the mixing water.

Overdose : Always take batch trial before uses of cement retarder. High dose will increase retardation effect and more curing required, How ever this may reduce the strength of concrete. But overdosing can be done if sulphate resisting cement or cement replacement materials are used.
