Glycine is used for treating schizophrenia, stroke, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and some rare inherited metabolic disorders. It is also used to protect kidneys from the harmful side effects of certain drugs used after organ transplantation as well as the liver from harmful effects of alcohol.

Glycine reagent is added to a water sample to selectively neutralize chlorine, allowing for the determination of ozone levels
 
 
In the Palintest photometer test for ozone, the DPD (N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine) reagent reacts with both ozone and chlorine, producing a colored solution. By adding glycine, the chlorine is neutralized, and the color produced then corresponds only to the ozone present. 
 
 
The reagent is compatible with Palintest photometers and test kits and is suitable for use with swimming pools, spas, drinking water, and industrial water. 

Glycine has multiple roles in many reactions such as gluconeogenesis, purine, haem, and chlorophyll synthesis and bile acid conjugation. Glycine is also used in the formation of many biologically important molecules. The sarcosine component of creatine is derived from glycine and S-adenosylmethionine.
